I Chase Jien Around the Pasture

I had talked to Ray Berta about how to approach the first day with my new baby. He said I should spend as much time with her as possible and "make her want to be with me." I think he didn't have in mind that she and I would be in a 10 acre pasture with 5 other 8 month old horses. (Oh yeah, Jien was born on 20 Feb, 2004, so she was about 8 months old when we picked her up.)

Some of the other babies were interested in me, but not Jien. She managed to keep another horse between me and her at all times, except when she was eating and I just say myself down in the middle and let them split around me. It was really exciting to be in the big middle of all those babies.

As it turns out, Jien was sort of one of the Boss Babies. She pushed everyone around pretty firmly - there was only one colt that she didn't back down at some point during the day.
