The second week in June, Tom, Judy, Nadia and The Great Hunters (Bonny and Doon)went to Nevada(?) to participate in a five day ride. The intent was not to actually ride all five days, but to let Nadia look around, see new things and get really tired.

Evidently, it turned out to have some side benefits for the humans involved. The site was really beautiful and the people were really nice. So far we only have pictures of the camp sites, but Judy has promised pictures of the trail as well. That was supposed to be pretty spectacular - lots of it was over 8000 feet in elevation. Here is a link to the official ride site with some pictures, but I understand they've changed the route for the better, in terms of scenery, so these pics may not do the new route justice. This row of pictures is what you see pulling in to the camp site. Not too promising, but it gets better.

It looks a little dry, but Bonny and Doon seemed to have had no problem settling in. Doon immediately went native and covered himself with what passes for sunscreen; as can be seen, Bonny tried to adhere to higher standards, but was not entirely successful.

Although it looks pretty barren at the campsite, there were pretty areas near by. Evidently, Fort Schellbourne was a stop on the Pony Express route. The following are photos of the ruins of the Pony Express station.

The first two pictures are of an abandoned hay field and the derrick used to work with the bales. The final photo is the camp grounds at sunset.

Since Nadia and Judy only rode two days, Tom, Judy and The Hunters had lots of time to explore. Tom said they hiked 6 - 10 miles each of three mornings before it got hot. The flowers were beautiful and the wild life interesting. We don't know what kind of lizard that is, but that's a horned toad, which I believe is an endangered species. Cool, eh?
