Why We Visit Texas

Wayne's family is not from Texas, but all of them in his mother's generation, including his mother, have ended up there. His aunts Cathy and Aline, his uncle JW and aunt Anne, and his cousin, Mike, all live in Marshall, a small town in East Texas.

The fun parts of the trip for Buzz were (a) snuggling with Kelley and (b) the road trip. (You've heard, "It's not the destination, it's the journey"? Buzz lived by those words!) So we don't have a lot of pictures of Buzz in Marshall, but we have a zillion of Buzz getting to Marshall and back again.

Buzz's first trip down to Texas was in 2010. We pulled off the freeway on a ranch road somewhere in Arizona, and found this creaking windmill pulling water into a stock tank. We walked out for awhile, and when we came back, we saw an example of the stock! I don't remember where we found the river, but Buzz enjoyed it. When we got to Marshall, we went to see Mike's horses, who were very curious about Buzz. Good thing he's used to ponies or that could have been scary!

On the way back from Marshall, we stopped in White Sands, New Mexico. It was beautiful and eerie. After that, we were in a hurry to get to Phoenix to visit our friend Lori, so we only made one more (very pretty!) stop for Buzz to run, right at sunset. Buzz had a nice nap in the car and was ready to entertain Lori at her place.

On our next trip we discovered Palo Duro Canyon State Park, in Texas. What a great place - Buzz could run, there's a creek, several miles of trails, and it's just gorgeous. And, because Texas came into the Union as a sovereign nation, there is very little (at least by California standards) public land, like big National Forests. Anyhow, Palo Duro is an oasis for travellers needing to Get Out of the CAR! And, yes, we went there on our way to Marshall and on the way back, which is why there are two sequences of red rock.

Just a couple of photos - we made our required stop at Palo Duro, where we had to give Buzz some water on the trail.

Again, we stopped at Palo Duro. The other pictures are from a couple of rest areas and the yard of the Marshall SPCA. We couldn't find anywhere to take Buzz for walks and we didn't want to drive, so we'd take him down to the SPCA, leave a donation and run Buzz til he was comfortable. Check the last picture in the sequence; he's still got his moves.

These pictures are from inside Kelley's house with Buzz attempting to introduce himself Jean Ann's (Kelley's neighbor) dog, Miss Lily Rose. This was about a month after his operation and he was feeling frisky!.
