Buzz Grows Up on the Ranch

As soon as Buzz had his shots and was cleared to go out in the universe, I started taking him to Robinson Ranch, where I kept my horse. I attribute a lot of Buzz's zen personality to having his first independent adventures there. Maybe the best thing about The Ranch was the friends he made. His first buddies were Bonny and Doon, the Ranch owners dogs. They ran him around like the terr(i)ors they were!
When Buzz had been there a couple of years, though, Toby arrived on the scene. B and D weren't willing to walk out with us, but Toby was ready for anything. The adventure the pictures are documenting is a hike we took to see what damage the Martin Fire had done in upper Bonny Doon. It was awfully hot and the fire lanes that Cal Fire had made had been drenched - as to actually retard the fire, so both Buzz and Toby took full advantage of the opportunity. It took us weeks to get Buzz clean, even with his (heh heh) Buzz cut hair.
I guess the horses came next. The first photo is of Ali, my old mare. The next is Zephyr, who was about Buzz's age, and finally, there's Sunny, who Buzz has had lots of adventures with - we rode together at Ft Ord - with Julie, his first kid contact. Next was Julie's little sister, Jade.
And then there's Ivy. Ivy was a pig who loved to escape her pen, walk . . . 10 feet and lie down. Buzz and I would sometimes feed the horses in the evening and find Ivy out and we had to herd her back into her pen. Sheesh.
One evening I caught her making her run. Rather than hustle her back in her pen I saved her moves, just in case anyone ever cared how she got loose.
When Buzz got thirsty, he went down to the garden to drink out of the fountain. I used to go with him, just because it was so beautiful.
But the real reason he loved The Ranch is that he could run and run and run and . . . With Wayne, with me, or with Toby, he moved.
